Zimbabwe qualifies for Netball world cup

Our fortunes when it comes to sporting haven’t been much favourable, but we’ve had our successes over the years, and we treasure them. The Zimbabwe senior netball team has made the country proud by qualifying for the 2019 Netball World Cup.

It is a dream come true for The Gems, who made the nation proud by defeating Kenya in a crucial match in Lusaka, Zambia; to secure a place at the 2019 World Cup to be hosted in Liverpool, England.

The Gems are now the third team from the country to qualify for the World Cup of a team sport after the rugby and cricket teams.

It is a proud moment for netball in Zimbabwe.

The Gems went into the championships, which acted as the means for qualification, laden with hope and determination.

Zimbabwe coach Lloyd Makunde said, “For the first time, Zimbabwe makes it to the World Cup, which is what we have always dreamt of and trained for. I am happy the girls have stood the competition, tough as it was, and we have made history.”

The efforts invested towards the preparation have yielded positive results, and qualifying for a World Cup is something to be proud of. Zimbabwe edged Kenya 58-42.

This also means that Uganda qualified for the 2019 Netball World Cup.
