Belgium’s football has been hit one of the biggest football scandals in its history as there are massive allegations of football fraud and match-fixing. The police made several raids on the country’s biggest football clubs and so far nine people are behind bars.
On the overall, 19 people have faced charges ranging from match fixing to money laundering.
The scandal has sucked in some of the country’s biggest clubs that include Anderletcht, Club Brugge and Standard Liege.
Because of these investigations, the transfers of Knowledge Musona and Marvellous Nakamba could come under heavy scrutiny. Musona transferred to Anderlecht and Nakamba transferred to Club Brugge.
Club Brugge coach Ivan Leko, whose team is playing in the Champions League, was also arrested yesterday as a result of the raids, a source close to the investigation said.
It is not clear what fate would await these players if the investigations into the fraud and match-fixing involving their transfers yields some incriminating conclusions.
The charges filed against 19 people include belonging to a criminal organization, match fixing, money laundering, and corruption, said federal prosecutor’s spokeswoman, Wenke Roggen.
